Designers and builders need practical tools to implement their climate-smart wood procurement approaches.

As firms and projects are increasingly committed to offering climate-smart wood sourcing for their clients, specification language has been consistently identified as a high value development area for CSWG. In response to this demand, CSWG and its partners launched design collaboration process on two model specification approaches:

  • A transparency and traceability-focused specification, designed to support the diversity of disclosure objectives that may exist across a project’s procurement approach.
  • A specification focused on the climate-smart forestry attributes of bid responses, compared against business-as-usual forest practices (see below).

Design Process & Timeline

Phase I of the design process includes peer review among architecture, engineering, construction, green building and sustainability, and forestry and supply chain professionals. Peer review opens September 28, 2023 and closes November 15, 2023.

Phase II of the design process involves virtual design refinement workshops to be held throughout the week of December 4, 2023.

Phase III of the design process involves releasing the specifications for use with building project partners on a case study basis, beginning in January, 2024.
